How often should you exercise? The science behind results

Coaching at Fit Depot

It's one of the most common questions in the fitness world: how often should you actually train? The honest answer is: it depends. But there are clear guidelines that will help you get the most out of your training without overloading yourself.

What does science say?

The World Health Organization recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous training. That works out to two to three solid workouts a week — something most people can manage.

Research shows that the biggest health benefit comes from going from doing nothing to working out twice a week. Three to four times a week is optimal for muscle development. More than five times a week yields little extra for most people and increases the risk of overuse.

Quality over quantity

More important than how often you train is how well you train. One well-guided 30-minute session can be more effective than an hour wandering around the gym without a plan. That's exactly why personal coaching is at the heart of Fit Depot.

With the BIOCIRCUIT™ system, you get a complete workout in 30 minutes that automatically adjusts to your level. Your coach on the floor ensures your form is correct and you're working at the right intensity.

The importance of recovery

Muscles don't grow during training, they grow during recovery afterwards. That's why rest is just as important as exertion. A good rule of thumb: give muscle groups at least 48 hours of rest before working them again.

At Fit Depot, we take this into account in your personal program. Your coach adjusts your workout based on how you're feeling and how well your body has recovered. Training at our clubs in Amsterdam or Doorn? You'll also benefit from NatureConnect lighting, which supports your natural rhythm and contributes to better recovery.

Consistency is key

The most important thing isn't whether you train two or four times a week — it's that you stick with it. Consistency beats intensity in the long run. That's why it's essential that your gym helps you keep coming back.

At Fit Depot, we do that by removing barriers: you're greeted by name, your program is always ready via your wristband, and after your workout you unwind with fresh coffee in the lounge. It feels less like an obligation and more like a regular part of your day.
